Old Farm Table

I salvaged this from my grandparents basement they were gonna toss it in the dumpster after they passed away, I was told the wood is hickory but I have no idea and the top has some rust debating on taking the old metal top off and using it as a scrap-booking table or would you repaint the top back to original look?
The only bummer is the drawer was missing but I am thinking of just making it look like a draw since I really don't have the tools to make one!

  1. Love these old tables! Would you be able to have the drawer hole to the back against the wall?

  2. What would you replace the top with if you remove the existing metal one? I have an old metal topped table- it had been re-painted when I acquired it and it looks fine. Not perfect, but that isn't a problem since it's in the laundry room. I agree with Sandee's suggestion- just turn the missing drawer side to the wall where it isn't seen. :-) We're going to try and have a get-together for Ohio bloggers in July. Let me know if you'd be interested. ~ Sue

  3. That is a wonderful old table. I love the detail on the legs. I read the other comments and would not have thought to just turn the missing drawer side to the wall....that's why I love blogging!!
I see you live in New Philadelphia. We used to live in North Canton. My husband grew up in Massillon and we get back occasionally to see his mother. We have really good friends who live in Strasburg.
    Have a great weekend.

  5. What a FANTASTIC table!! I always go for the easiest method of rehab...which is usually new paint. :) And the idea of turning the table around is perfect.

  6. I am thinking of painting the base of it an off white and distressing it but the top I am not real sure about maybe give it a good sanding since it does have some rust and giving it a coat of gloss white on the top and glossy black around the edge see how the weather holds up this week here in Ohio you never know thank u girls...

  7. Thanks for your comment on my laundry room dresser makeover...I love how it turned out! :) Have you seen the island I made out of a table like the one you have? If you'd like to see it, go to the my favorites tab at the top of my blog, it's listed in there. I think you'll like what I made!

  11. Having it around will be a nice remembrance for you whatever you decide to do with the drawer. And who knows, you just might find a drawer kicking around somwhere in a junk store - lol.

  12. I think it's really cool! I would add a gathered curtain made out of old ticking or an old flour sack.*winks* Fellow thrifter and your newest follower. Vanna

  13. Would definitely KEEP the top. You might be able to find a basket you can slide in where the drawer was.

  14. I had an exact table (borrowed from my Aunt) in my first apartment! The only difference is the white top had a black pin-stripe around the edge. So glad to see that you saved it from the land-fill!

  16. I love that table I would have been thrilled to get it. Why not just put a drawer front over the hole. Maybe you could pick one up at a habitat store...Of course that depends on where you live. I would definitely keep the top. Can't wait to see what you do

  17. Love the farm table. I bet paint would do wonders on the metal top. I agree with Polka Dot Closet. If nothing else you could just use a scap of wood and cover over the hole then you could find a fabulous drawer pull to add a little bling!

  18. Love this farm table and the top is perfect for a work surface just the way it is. If you can't find a drawer front, I'm thinking a piece of scrap wood with a decorative wood embellishment (from a craft store) would look nice. Then you could either paint the whole table out or just the faux drawer.

  19. I totally LOVE this table!! I always wanted an old farmhouse table.....they are so far out of my price range right now..... someday!! I would just strip it down and see what the wood looks like under all that paint. Yes, a fake drawer would look perfect! Bummer its gone...never know though eBay has it all you may find one. lol
